Enhancing Energy Access in Rural and Peri-urban Settlements:
Knowledge-Based Policy Engagement.

A UNEP facilitated workshop

25-27 May 2009, Cape Town, South Africa

The three-day workshop brought together stakeholders, policy makers and energy experts from East and Southern Africa to focus on central issues related to energy access. The workshop presented and discussed the latest studies on energy access for the poor as well as energy security, and related these results to technology transfer, capacity building and achieving the MDGs.

Key to these issues is the availability of information on energy needs, best practices, technologies and funding possibilities. The event was a combined initiative of the UNEP-facilitated knowledge network Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD) and the EUEI-UNEP Capacity Enhancement and Mobilisation Action for Energy in Africa (CEMA).

The workshop also focused on how institutional and human capacity in the sub-regions can be enhanced and mobilized so that national and regional authorities are best equipped to take advantage of present and future cooperation and support facilities, especially the Africa EU Energy Partnership (AEEP)

See the workshop programme for download of presentations.
