Access to Modern Energy in Urban and Peri-urban Areas:

Policies, Practices, and Knowledge Sharing

A UNEP facilitated workshop for North, West and Central Africa

3-5 November 2009

Pullman Hotel, Dakar, Senegal

Programme (with links to presentations), Flyer (English, Franais)

The three-day workshop brought together stakeholders, policy makers and energy experts from North, West and Central Africa to focus on central issues related to energy access, especially for urban and peri-urban areas. The workshop presented and discussed the latest studies on energy access for the poor as well as energy security, and relate these results to technology transfer, capacity building and achieving the MDGs.

Key to these issues is the availability of information on energy needs, best practices, technologies and funding possibilities. The event was a combined initiative of the UNEP-facilitated knowledge network Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD) and the EUEI-UNEP Capacity Enhancement and Mobilisation Action for Energy in Africa (CEMA).

The workshop also focused on how institutional and human capacity in the sub-regions can be enhanced and mobilized so that national and regional authorities are best equipped to take advantage of present and future cooperation and support facilities within the framework of the Africa EU Energy Partnership (AEEP). A special session presented a hands-on demonstration of a new WIKI-based knowledge and information tool being developed by the CEMA team, entitled KIBESA - Knowledge and Information Base for Energy Solutions in Africa.

The Dakar workshop was hosted by ENDA (Senegal), in close collaboration with the UNEP Ris Centre and the GNESD Secretariat.
